Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
