Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a diverse cast of characters, and a thrilling plot including celestial beings, demons, and dark forces increasing in influence within the city.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

Episode 3 finished on a huge suspense moment and revealed the first table of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to begin their own adventure, distinct from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team includes Teor (played by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), the cleric (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was obvious from the outset that having everyone at one table would be impossible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Prelude, connecting the personal journeys before dividing into three smaller tables: Fighters, Planners, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for adventurers who prefer a classically intense battle-oriented story mode where diplomatic options are few and far between.

At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric the cleric might appear unsuited, but the developments of the latest installment make it clear why these five characters are best suited for the warrior group.

Why They Must Go

First, the party understands precisely where to head next after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose death started the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, attacking the rogue, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then cleared his liabilities and escaped to a fortified location in the northern region, north of the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each adventurer has a specific drive to leave the city the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as the companion and best friend, seeks vengeance.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the northern area and advises that it is a hostile location.
  • Tyranny and The healer, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to eliminate the fighter and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their reputation as key figures in the powerful family could enable the team enter areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter pledged a unbreakable promise to The savior for his deliverance and will now accompany him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are sought by the authorities that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally no longer safe:

  • Thimble and The character are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The healer defied the influential house and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • Teor is marked for death by the family.

This leaves them little choice but to journey toward Timmony in pursuit of the traitor.

What’s Next?

From the recent installment’s Cooldown, we find out that the combat party will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight players to assemble the Questers and Schemers tables.

Fans can look forward to discovering which players will be in which group in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, released on October 24.
